Why has my resting heart rate just jumped to 160 beats per minute?

I am a 23 year old healthy female, who is 18 weeks pregnant. I was laying on the couch watching tv and my heart just started racing. I counted twice. It’s beating roughly 160 times per minute. This has happened before but not recently. Usually I am up moving around when it happens. But to be just laying still on the couch it just seems very odd. It’s been doing this for about 15/20 minutes now and still going.

It sounds like you may have superventricular tachacardia, or SVT. It is malfunction in the neurological pathways of your heart that causes palpatations and increased beats per minute. During pregnancy your hearts defect can first become known with the onset of symptoms. I have SVT. My symptoms began when I was about 22 yrs old and not pregnant. At rest, my heart rate would increase as high as 180 and 210 beats per minute with accompanying pain and discomfort. I had a catharization to investgate the problem more with an intent to ablate the misfiring neurological receptors. Sadly, my problem is irreversible, but 98% are safely fixable. You need to see your regular physician, your OBGYN, and a cardiologist to explore your options. It is not usually fatal, but it can be.

Why aren’t you on the phone with the doctor?

Get checked RIGHT AWAY. If your blood pressure gets too high, you can go into renal failure. You and/or your baby can die.
PLEASE get checked NOW!
