Hip-hop is really the proper name. One can rap in any song, but that wouldn't necessarily make it a hip-hop song. There are also a lot of other things associated with hip-hop, like clothes, breakdancing, slang, graffiti, DJing, rapping, etc. “Rap” is a verb, not a genre.

As genres, I've heard that people classify negative lyrics as rap, and positive lyrics as hip hop. I disagree. I'm a fan of the culture, and to me, its full of ambiguos people.
