Comments on: What’s the difference between poetry and rap?

I am a poet and a lot of times I’ve had people to say that I’m a rapper and not a poet, but I think there is a difference. Speaking for myself, when I write poems I do it with a lot of emotions and I like to have the full attention of my audience, so they will get the message. I feel like rappers are out for more show than feelings and emotions. They like a lot of noise and people and they care more about having a good beat. Poets we don’t need music or a lot of people around. We like to have your undivided attention. And a lot of us are shy and would rather not be famous. We just want to write something that people can feel and relate to. Rappers care more about it being something people will dance to. I think poets put a lot of more thought into what we are saying than rappers. Just my personal opinion as a poet.

Rap lacks real emotion and is pure sh!t. You could be rhyming too much, rhyming every other word makes your poetry lose meaning.

i think, every art that using language as its media is DEFENETLY a literature works; &your condition, rap its just "another form" of generative-poetry in postmo art
if your poem sounds like rap, "so be it", i said
because its readers-interpretation on your works
&you just CAN"T tell people what you meant, about your work

In the poetry both meaning and melody are important but in Rap the meaning can be neglected or not appropriate for the atmosphere which the meaning create (the meaning and the melody in a poem must be in a harmony with each other).

In my humble opinion, true rap is poetry. But remember im talking about lryicists here not rappers. A rapper will talk about how much hes got or wishes he had. For example read up on Nas. He has never called himself a rapper. he OFTEN refers to himself as a poet.
