I guess its really to do with personal taste and opinion. Some people appreciate the lyrical content and others its all about the music.
To me, rap is poetry the art of telling a story thought provoking or otherwise (although some rap tunes of today i cant defend no matter how much i love rap music)
If you get the chance to listen to rap artist without the music (a cappella) its a chance to find out if you really listen to the words or do you still have the beat of the tune in you head.

For the artist you have mentioned above Dre for example is known more so now a days for his music production so straight away listeners know a Dr Dre production and are most likely to go for the beat etc
A fairly newer artist Chamilionare i think its a case of a great hook or an annoying one and good music production.
Aside from an artist like Kanye west when is the last time you heard a rap tune with great lyrical content, told a story and had a specific meaning and not just talking about money clothes and hoes etc etc etc

Rap of ole skool offered the Hip Hop culture aspect and i guess was and still is in some cases a great thing to be a part of.
There are a good few rappers out there keeping true to the art form and also not getting as much fame or airtime as others who have jumped on the band wagon with commercial hype (Soul ja boy)
that being said different music to soothe or groove different moods. Each to their own
