For more modern hip hop, software (ableton, FL, Reason) is a good and cheap setup. as it will include software synths aswell as you being able to download softsynths of the net. and youll be able to do everything, drums, synths, sound effects, recording all in your computer. depending on what kind of hip hop you want to make, a sampler (one of the mpc series being the cheapest, but still effective), a turntable and collecting vinyl is a classic setup for an old school style.
