The simplest way to get started is to get an program like Cubasis or Fruity Loops. You can just click around to create some beats. However, there’s very little dynamism in the sounds you create (velocity doesn’t vary much on the same sound) so it sounds very robotic.
The easiest way to breathe a little life into the beats is to connect a MIDI keyboard to your computer.
I myself have an electronic drumset connected to my computer but I still have to figure out a way to map the notes the drumset produces to the notes that the program plays.
