What happens if your last bar of music doesn't have enough beats?

in 4/4 time, i used a triplet of eight notes (to fill one quarter note) as an "upbeat" to the beginning of my piece, so that the first bar of music only has one quarter notes worth of notes in it. at the end of the piece though, it turns out that i only have a quarter note and a half worth of beats in the last bar. are either of these writings legible?
also, is there a symbol that shows that this is the end of a certain section of music?

Sometimes something will have just a beat or two at the first of the piece, and the remaining beats of the first measure will be at the end. A double bar at the end of the music shows that it is the end.
