You question is odd. You want to compose? So you want to write note by note? Or play your piano and have that recorded, but not by your crappy mic? I don't quite know what you mean. I have an m-audio axiom 61 midi controller that I use in my music production, and I love it. Here's a link to the specs. http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-Axiom-61-61Key-USB-MIDI-Controller-?sku=706315 I use it in conjunction with Reason 4.0, which has samplers, synths, loop players, etc. Here is the link to the Reason site. http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/ I have some great piano sounds in Reason, and they sound great when played with the axiom. I can also then add drums, bass, effects, violin, whatever I can think of. The program is not simple, but a simple program would not allow you full control over your music the way Reason does. I'm not sure if you are looking for this type of setup, I just thought I'd tell you about mine, it is a good virtual studio. Here is a track I wrote the other day. http://www.zshare.net/audio/592774843a7858e9/
So, that is what I suggest to everyone, just because the setup has made me so happy. I love my gear and I love my music. You could probably also just go get a good mic for a couple hundred bucks and hang it over your piano, and record with Audacity. Audacity is a free audio editor. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
