The most common one is a Shamisen and the Koto.
Theres also the Sanshin and the japanese flute called the Shakuhachi.
Its really hard to track down who exactly created these japanese instruments, but all I know is that similar looking instruments were brought to japan during the feudal era and were modified and were changed into the instruments we have now. According to my parents, they say that an instrument which looked similar to a banjo was first introduced in egypt where it slowly spread east asia where the design changed and the idea of strings spread.
