I started hip hop 2 years ago. I think you should go for it. In a beginners class you would start with warm ups, maybe learn some combos (depends on the teacher) and you start to learn the routine for the recital. I would wear sneakers, sweat pants and a tank top or tight fitting t-shirt. Take a bottle of water with you, relax and have fun.

Of course you should take class! It's never too late. Hip hop is not like ballet dance. It is for all shapes and sizes. Also, depending on which area of hip hop you want to get into, your gymnastics experience could help you a lot. In a beginners class you will probably learn the basics in various areas of hip hop dance. You will probs learn how to pop, wave, tut, and basic breaking moves. Personally, if you liked gymnastics you would probs like breaking the best. I'm a dancer and I've taken a few hip hop classes and have been in some hip hop pieces and I like popping the best. But you are probs fearless if you are in gymnastics. My only concern for you is that you seem a little self conscious. If you want to really excell in hip hop you can't be insecure because it involves a lot of personality and improvisation.

Your weight shouldn't have any influence on your decision. Any style of dancing is a great workout, and could help you build a positive image. If you are interested, find somewhere that you can take a free trial class to start. Any good dance school/ program should allow you to test them out before handing over a ton of money. Wear comfortable clothing, and just try to have fun. Because you have some background in gymnastics, you should find some of the moves come naturally to you.
In conclusion, do what you want. But don't be afraid to try something new.

Your weight or height shouldn't have an influence if you should do it or not. I know some very big people that are in the Hip Hop industry. You just wear comfortable clothes in your classes. It's somewhat obvious, there isnt any dress code. You usually do some easy combos and choreography in beginner classes. In the end the final decision is yours.
