a mixture of both. Technically there’s not a "dirty south" genre that was created here. Regardless of what fans think. the music that came from the south (mainly hip hop/rap) came from the 3 major influences in mixing styles combined (London’s type, the East coast - NY, and LA’s style of mixing combined). With a little bit of a twist.

I live in Richmond, VA and honestly we are trying to separate ourselves from both. New Yorkers consider us the dirty south but really we consider that to be Atlanta and areas like that. And even though the east coast consists of everything from Maine to Florida geographically, as far as music it would be different. When you think of the east coast versus west coast beef, you think of Cali vs. New York. No one ever thinks about the dc area when you first think of east coast. Virginia and Maryland has a different sound that doesn’t fall into either category. Think about Missy Elliot, the Clipse, Chris Brown, Trey Songs, or whoever else you can think of from VA, DC, & MD. Maybe we should consider ourselves the "middle east" just like there’s a midwest. I don’t know. But I would say neither.
