How do you feel about hip hop today vs the hip hop back in the day?

I like the old hip hop…the beats are hotter too and not sampled like some of today’s on. The lyrics better too unlike today’s on that is filled with drugs and sex and disrespect to women…
Self-destruction and cool like that was awesome…what do you think? Thanks!

Its very different. Back then we didn’t have garbage rappers like Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, too many to name. Back then Lil Wayne was good. Before The Carter 3 he was one my top rappers now hes just plain garbage.

yeah i agree with you on everything exept the part about the beats i think the beats are better today and thats what attracts people to rap these days

I agree with you. i think old skool music was more about fun, kickin it wit ur friends, dancing, rebeling, and inspiration, and stuff like tht. thought old skool music did sometime talk about sex and drugs it wasnt as prominent. now its all about money cars women drugs guns and sex and materialistic things.old skool music is timeless to me. you can play it anytime, even a hundred years from now you can still turn ur radio or ipod and jam to it. new skool music is rarely like tht. its music of the moment. it usual doesnt have much meaning its jus catchy. most new artist search though old music to find a song or a sound tht has been forgotten and use it as if it were their own original work. i wish new artist would create music not recreate. although i do like some of present artist and thier music.

C.R.E.A.M >>>>>>>>>>>> Bedrock
Baggy Jeans >>>>>>>>>>>> Skinny Jeans
DJ Premier, J Dilla >>>>>>>>>>>> Soulja Boy, Kanye West (well not so much kanye)
It was better back then because men would actually look like men (no homo). And not like these guys/girls http://theinsanityreport.com/home/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/skinny-jeans.jpg

The artists back in the day had more creative control over their music. Also, alot of producers back then (Preem, Dre, and Pete Rock to name a few) grew up listening to jazz and 60s/70s soul and funk that were some vital influences in their creativity.

isn’t near as good now as it was in the 90’s. I find myself jamming more pop music than hip-hop these days

If you didn’t realize it rappers from back then sampled other artists’ music as well so this is not a new trend. But songs from back in the day did have more feeling and meaning to them. Its like they rapped with a passion. Now they just rap cause they think its cool or have a few minutes of fame. At the same time I have to disagree with you on the topics rapped about, because back then rappers talked sex, hoes, and drugs BUT they told a story along with it. Now in some songs they’ll repeat over and over again I f*cked that b!tch, I f*cked that hoe. No creativity at all.

Lupe Fiasco doesnt sample that many beats and his lyrics are the best i’ve ever heard
other than him and J.Cole i think people like FLorida lilwayne drake and all the rest of the main stream ruined hip hop hopefully wale and J.Cole can bring it back and hopefully drake will fade away in a few years
and mos def talib kweli (blackstar) kept it fresh for awhile and Q-Tip’s doin his thing but they are too old people say but with these wack rappers out here i’d rather listen to these 30-40 year old rappers

I’m no music expert, but I turn on the radio these days and am disgusted! What the hell did I just hear? Is what I ask myself after I turn it off.
I must agree with you. Back then there was something they were singing about. Today is about how many "#0$ in different area codes" they have and auto tune.
Yuck! Also the crossover stuff is bad. Like Lady Gaga. The stuff she sings about "I wanna take a ride on your disco stick." What? What happened to "I wanna hold your hand" like the Beetles would sing?
Yes I must agree with you on all points. Music these days is terrible. The beats are ok, and the lyrics are terrible. Ke$hia is currently trying to out vulgar Gaga.
OMG. Solja Boy tell em’, what ever his name is, made that sexist song; kiss me though the phone. He talks only about her physically, "your complexion, your voice is so lovely." Not a mention of if she is smart or nice.
Remember "..and that’s the way it is." Yeah, these days we get "I’m a p!mp in every sense of the word 8!t(h better trust and believe them." Oh, no things have gone downhill indeed.
Good question.

i like the old hip hop stuff too , krs 1, jungle brothers, queen latifah, tribe called quest, LL cool j,de la soul, digable planets etc. there was more of a message and it was fun, and as you mentioned, they was not the mysogny and the hardcore gangster culture element. those were the days, remember the high top fades and people wearing pacifiers on a chain.
i do like some of the newer stuff, although it tends to be more positive like
Blackstar, Common and the roots, i have to admit i like my biggie, tupac and t.i too, but nothing like the older stuff !

the old was much more creative and original, today everything is too cliche
