A infant’s heartbeats around 140 times per minute. Children’s rate changes from 120 (age 1) to 75 (age 10). After that age heart rates are about 75 beats per minute. If you assume an average lifetime of 77.5 years and 365.25 days in a year (525,960 minutes/year) you get a total of 3,249,117,900 beats over the average lifetime–ignoring beats prior to birth.

Your book is behind the times. Average lifetimes are now between 75 and 80 years. But getting back to the problem, since you want an estimate, try the product
(88/60) beat/second * 3.14×10^7 sec/yr * 60 yr.
