For something to be called rap- if you want to get to the technical definition of it, it means rhyming lyrics to a beat, with or without accompaniment. There is nothing about the definition of rap saying that the content must involve pimps and ho's. But that's what seems to sell the records now so everyone jumps on that bandwagon.

Look at Will Smith. Grant it he's more of an actor now, but when he rapped it wasn't "vulgar". Also, while I don't listen to it, there is "Christian Rap". Sounds like an oxy-moron at first but a few people I know that are more into the Contemporary Christian music are fans of Jesus Rap as I like to call it.

i'd disagree with your friends, and i listen to a lot of rap. Rap music i think is best separated from hip-hop in that it talks more about social, political, cultural, and sometimes historical issues. Id classify a group like Jedi Mind Tricks as rap.

hip hop tends to be more gauged to the gangsta lifestyle, traditionally with a more laidback feel to the beats, lyrics, and general style.

You have to remember that with kids these days, it's "cool" to be offensive. So, to them, if they aren't cursing or writing lyrics that are about anti-establishment, they must suck.

I'm not a big fan of rap, but those artists/groups that I do like are quite possibly some of the best artists in that field and don't write too many songs about sex, drugs and violence.
