Does a rap song need to be rude and vulgar to be called rap?

I’m a big fan of rap music, but a lot of my friends who love this music too think that the best and only true rap is the one that speaks about girls, drugs, money, violence etc in such a rude and bad language. I certainly disagree because I don’t think that’s how rap should really be. Rap music can be forceful and strong without having to curse or say bad words. A rapper can always find a way to get his message across without having to offend somebody. His message too should always be worth the while not just a piece of junk!

For something to be called rap- if you want to get to the technical definition of it, it means rhyming lyrics to a beat, with or without accompaniment. There is nothing about the definition of rap saying that the content must involve pimps and ho’s. But that’s what seems to sell the records now so everyone jumps on that bandwagon.
Look at Will Smith. Grant it he’s more of an actor now, but when he rapped it wasn’t "vulgar". Also, while I don’t listen to it, there is "Christian Rap". Sounds like an oxy-moron at first but a few people I know that are more into the Contemporary Christian music are fans of Jesus Rap as I like to call it.

i’d disagree with your friends, and i listen to a lot of rap. Rap music i think is best separated from hip-hop in that it talks more about social, political, cultural, and sometimes historical issues. Id classify a group like Jedi Mind Tricks as rap.
hip hop tends to be more gauged to the gangsta lifestyle, traditionally with a more laidback feel to the beats, lyrics, and general style.

You have to remember that with kids these days, it’s "cool" to be offensive. So, to them, if they aren’t cursing or writing lyrics that are about anti-establishment, they must suck.
I’m not a big fan of rap, but those artists/groups that I do like are quite possibly some of the best artists in that field and don’t write too many songs about sex, drugs and violence.

Noooo….
There are loads of well respected rap artists in the hip hop community that were praised for there positivity and rejection of violence/bad language etc. Listen to De La Soul, Mos Def, Black Star, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Jurassic 5, The Jungle Brothers, Prince Paul, Q-Tip, Lupe Fiasco and MF DOOM… (Especially A Tribe Called Quest). My 3 favorite rap albums of all time are completely clean, Madvillainy by Madvillain, Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest and 3 Feet High and Rising by De Las Soul.

Your friends don’t know nothing about rap.

Absolutely not. A lot of rap music has those elements, but some rap doesn’t show signs of being rude or vulgar. For example, listen to A Tribe Called Quest or MC Hammer. You can also search positive rap in itunes, and an itunes essential will come up and it will show you a ton of artists who aren’t rude or vulgar.
