Afterwards, I show the lyrics to my friends in my band, and give them a list of songs (sometimes even full albums) that influenced and that are similar to the song I wrote. I hum the tune, and they help me write out the notes. After that process is finished, 9 times out of 10 it sounds just how I imagined it. Some songs I write start with a basic riff that I have been messing with. Sometimes a vocal part will just pop into my head that seems to fit it. Some riffs just evolve into a full blown instrumental. In some situations I will sit down with a keyboard and come up with a full blown backing track of bass, drums, and keys, and then add a guitar part later. Occasionally I will start form a lyric that has been floating in my head and build a song around that. I hope that answers your question! That really depends on the situation.
