Can you major in hip hop dance at any US college or university?

I mentor a young woman who is not classically trained but is well trained in hip hop dance and wants to pursue it in college. Most dance schools we’ve looked at require years of classical training.

Most colleges and universities that have respected dance departments do not specify the form of dance that your major is in. Most design their curriculum to include many different styles to include ballet, hip-hop, improvisation, modern, flamenco…and some even offer african, middle-eastern and ballroom. Some colleges have more class offerings than others. It is a good idea to research a few programs and see exactly what styles they require and offer, and base your decision on the results.

What a waste of tuition!
