Any recommendations on a good software program to record vocals and instrumentals?

I’m a song writer, and I want to record some demo versions of my songs. I’m on a tight budget, so I’m looking for something that doesn’t cost a fortune. I need to be able to record vocals, instrumentals. I’d also love to be able to do mixes w/ this software, but it’s not absolutely necessary.

Audacity works great. And its free. When recording though the software is not going to get you better quality recordings. The hardware in your computer such as the sound card will improve quality. But audacity is a great program for editing and recording. It will meet all your needs.
